Excerpt from Legendary Leaders of the Bible
Leadership Lesson #37: Maintain A Devoted Lifestyle
And [the Pharisees] asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose” (John 1:26 NKJV).
John knew the people needed a Savior and that the promised deliverer of the world was coming. He was the forerunner who came before Jesus declaring the need for repentance and salvation. Evangelist to many, he boldly and unashamedly declared the Good News of Jesus Christ. He lived a life devoted to the message of Christ long before Jesus’s ministry was known to those who lived in John and Jesus’ day.
His message was not popular, especially with the Jewish leaders. But John’s devotion to the message and commitment to prepare the way of the Lord was his strength in the face of hardship. It kept him focused and ready until the day he saw Jesus walking in his ministry and purpose as the promised One who takes away the sins of the world.
